Good morning from Manchester Airport, where I’m starting yet another adventure.
However, I have a favour to ask anyone. And it’s DON’T CHANGE YOUR MONEY AT THE AIRPORT.
Why? Here’s two examples from TravelEx at Manchester airport this morning:
Travelex’s ATMs at Manchester Airport are are offering:
- 0.986EUR to the Pound
- 1.134USD to the Pound
In other words – rip off rates.
Let’s compare that to the spot numbers care of xe.com
Even accounting for 2.95% markup, these hardly match any high street or credit card use rate
Even worse were the rates at the currency exchange desk – which also attracts a commission fee.
And as for Heathrow airport, the rates are slightly better – but not stellar in the least.
I’m going to be blunt here readers – Exchanging Money at airports unless it’s out of a local bank ATM is probably the worst thing you can do when travelling to your bank balance.
Please do any of the following when travelling:
- Use a Forex fee credit card
- Use Monzo or another challenger bank service
- Use a credit card for spending
- Get some currency from your local friendly high street currency exchange place
- Order it online
- Withdraw money from an ATM abroad unless the fees aren’t too punitive
You’ll still end up with a better rate than what TravelEx.
Because the rates posted above are nothing short of disgusting.
