When I travel, I like to have easy travel options into the city – and for me, that’s in the form of public transport. At Taipei Taoyuan Airport (the main entry point into Taiwan) a new mass transit option has now opened – The Taoyuan Airport MRT.

The route runs from Taipei Main station (a short distance from Taipei Railway station), that puts you the centre of Taipei.
There are two types of services on the route:
- Express Service– This connects the Taipei to the Airport Terminals 1 and 2 to
- Chang Gung Memorial Hospital Station
- New Taipei Industrial Park Station
- Taipei Main station
- This service takes around 38 minutes from Taipei Main Station to the Airport
- Use purple trains
- Commuter Service – This connects Taipei to Taoyuan HSR Station and Huanbei Station via the Airport
- Calls at all stations
- Takes 70 minutes to get to the Airport terminals.
- Uses blue trains
Tickets to use the line cost a reasonable NT$160 – around £4.25/US$5.20/€4.95/¥595 (discounted by 50% through to the 2nd April 2017). The full pricing here. Payment is by cash, EasyCard (the ticketing method used for the Tapei Metro) iPass and HappyCash.
Services start at 6 am from Taipei, 6:12 am from Taipei Taoyuan Airport and end around 11 pm both ways. Four express services an hour are offered, as well as commuter services that operate every 15 minutes through the day.
There is in-town check being offered with the new service (with the ability to check luggage in before you get on the train) Currently, it is limited to EVA Air, China Airlines Mandarin Airlines and Uni Airways. According to Twain News, you will need to check in 3 hours before your flight departs at the City Terminal to take advantage of the service
It’s good to see a reasonably priced service to get from the airport to the city and makes a city a lot more accessible than a bus and taxi links (especially for an independent traveller).
The Taipei Taoyuan Airport MRT is now open… and I’m thinking I need a trip to Taipei now…
