Lufthansa is expanding its onboard “buy-on-board” service – “Onboard Delights” with an expanded programme on its long-haul operations.
The new offering will be made available from the 1st of December, initially being offered to 37 routes for passengers in Economy and Premium Economy. This will cover long-haul routes to North America, South America, Asia and South Africa.
The service will then be available on all intercontinental flights in spring 2022.
This will be in addition to drinks and meals that will be served as part of the meal option.
According to Lufthansa
With this new offer, Lufthansa is responding to the different needs of guests when it comes to choosing food and beverages on board. Especially between meals, guests’ wishes are very individual – Lufthansa is meeting this demand now with a wider selection.
Read into that what you will.
Some options the airline wishes to highlight from their onboard menu include Baumkuchen from Dallmayr, kettle chips made from organic potatoes, and the Share organic nut bar are offered.
Be prepared to pay, however.
Want some kinder bars? That’s €2. Crisps? €3. Haribo Goldbears? €2.
If you’re heading to the bar, expect to pay for your Gin and Tonic, as well as bubbly.
A G&T will set you back €6 (and you have to request the tonic), whilst if you want to look premium and have a bottle of bubbly, expect to pay €15 for 200ml.
Well, it’s one way to monetise down the back of the plane
It’s always disappointing when any premium carrier (which Lufthansa and most of its group position itself in), decide to scrap the barrel for those few extra Eurocents and roll out extra purchasing options for what was once included options (especially in the spirits department).
It will offer passengers choice – but sometimes, I think airlines forget that 1) it feels cheap, 2) it can tarnish an image of a premium carrier and 3) passengers will just bring their own snacks onboard, creating a mess for the onboard cleaners on arrival at their destination.
But still – anything for those extra Eurocents.
