It’s time for the first dose of Airplane Art Extra for this trip. For those who don’t turn up to this blog too often, Airplane Art is our weekly dose of Airplane Pictures, with a little commentary which we syndicate normally on Sundays.
This variant of Airplane Art is much more of “shove photos onto a page, make sure I get the right model of aircraft and comment about the location where I’m shooting” as opposed to the usual in-depth research. Thus, it’s a little gentler on the brain.
The location
The Holiday Inn/Staybridge Suites property offered two room view options when I booked, with Airport Views available at a premium. I paid the premium for this room, which should grant you a high-ish floor and a view of O’Hare.
In theory, you are facing south of Runway 10R/28R – one of the northmost runways at the O’Hare Airport Complex. And near the north cargo terminals.

Mapping – OpenStreetMap and its contributors. Google Maps here
As you can see, you’re on the Northeastern end of the O’Hare Field, so, even like the Hyatt Regency O’Hare, you are in the hands of the air traffic control deities and winds to which way the aircraft is landing or taking off. And weather.
On the first day, it was wet, to put it mildly, so, apart from seeing silhouettes in the rain clouds, it was a write-off.
The next day was a lot better, with traffic departing towards Lake Michigan. A little bit more of a challenge to shoot (especially with the morning sun), but not completely awful if you shoot in RAW and spend a little time afterwards in your Image Manager/Editor of choice (I’m still an Adobe Lightroom shop… for how long is another matter.
As usual, I’ve got my usual camera combo for aviation photography – a Canon EOS R, with a Canon 100-400mm f4.5-f5.6 IS L Series.
I’ve had the DO lens I use in the bag, but with aircraft increasing in power on takeoff, the focus/shooting time was important. If I had the EOS R50, this would not be a good combination.
Yes, I should buy a new Canon RF100-500mm lens. If you want to fund that, my PayPal details are available.
Right – onto the photos.

Amerian Eagle Embraer E175. There’s another aircraft circling in the photo, too.

American Airlines Boeing 737-800

American Airlines Airbus A321ceo

United Airlines Boeing 737-800

United Airlines Airbus A319 – look for the clown nose.

AIRZETA/Air Incheon/ex Asiana Air Cargo Boeing 747-400 Freighter

United Airlines Airbus A321neo

Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 789-9
Overall
For a photography location, it’s not bad at all, given you are shooting through some rather thick layers of glass and sometimes rain-stained windows. Is it worth the extra £10 for an airport-facing room? Absolutely, especially if you need to chill and enjoy watching aircraft land.
Just hope the winds go your way to get the views and images you want.
