AIX26: Airbus moves the A220 programme forward with Airspace confirmed for three airlines

At Aircraft Interiors Expo 2026, Airbus made a major announcement for the Airbus A220 – with launch partners confirmed for its Airspace inflight product… as well as some desification optionsAirbus launches further customers with the Airspace Cabin

Last year, Air Canada was confirmed as the initial launch customer for Airspace on the Airbus A220 family. Today, Airbus confirmed regional launch customers, including Lufthansa Group (covering Europe) and Qantas Group (covering Australia).

The Airspace cabin on the Airbus A220 brings new, larger overhead bins, switching from pivot bins to shelf bins, but adding 20% more space, allowing bags to be stored on their side.

There’s also a running light underneath this. Passengers will notice a new Passenger Service Unit (PSU), too.

In terms of cabin enablers, for those airlines that want the most capacity from the Airbus A220, there’s news too, as the company works on validating a 160-seat layout for ultra-dense operations.

This would involve putting the seats at a 28″ seat pitch to get the people in, with two extra rows of seats.

No timeline has been offered for the implementation and offering of the 28″ pitch/160-seat high-density layout.

We’ll have more from the Airbus booth later, as there was a lot to explore this year.
