Azerbaijan Airlines takes delivery of its first A321neo, as well as another A320neo

It’s been a busy week for Azerbaijan Airlines, with the airline receiving both the first Airbus A321neo and a further A320neo for its fleet.

We’ll look at the Airbus A321neo first, which was delivered on a lease from AerCap. This is the first of three new Airbus A321neo aircraft to be delivered to Azerbaijan Airlines. The aircraft was handed over at a special ceremony at the Airbus Delivery Centre in Hamburg, marking the introduction of the A321neo into the airline’s fleet.

This delivery is part of a broader program agreed in 2024, which includes three A321neo and three A320neo aircraft. The first two A320neos were delivered earlier this year, with the remaining aircraft scheduled for delivery through November 2026.

Meanwhile, on a separate contract, Azerbaijan Airlines has expanded its A320neo fleet with the fourth to be delivered to the airline.

Both aircraft feature the Airspace by Airbus cabin, with larger overhead bins and customisable lighting featured. They also feature IFE platforms, high-speed internet and individual monitors in Business Class.

On the A321neo delivery, Peter Anderson, Chief Commercial Officer, AerCap, said:

“AerCap is very pleased to be the first lessor to introduce the A321neo to AZAL, helping the airline to expand and modernize its fleet,”

“The addition of these new, fuel-efficient aircraft will enhance AZAL’s operational capabilities, support its network expansion, and deliver an improved passenger experience. We value our partnership with AZAL and look forward to continuing to support the airline in the years ahead.”

Jamil Manizade, Chief Commercial Officer, Azerbaijan Airlines, added:

“The arrival of our first Airbus A321neo represents another significant step in AZAL’s long-term fleet modernization strategy. As we continue investing in next-generation aircraft, we are strengthening our operational capabilities, improving fuel efficiency, and creating new opportunities for sustainable network growth,”

The delivery of the A321neo, following the recent induction of our A320neo aircraft, supports our ambition to build a modern, efficient, and passenger-focused fleet that will meet the evolving needs of Azerbaijan’s aviation sector and our growing customer base.”

Growing the fleet

With the new deliveries, Azabajian Airlines is growing, with 29 aircraft in its fleet. And that airline isn’t stopping there, as it grows its network, aiming to increase its fleet to 50 aircraft by 2032.

For the airline, the new aircraft represent another significant step in its fleet modernisation strategy as it builds Baku into a hub for travellers to use.

With both the A321neo and A320neo, there’s plenty to offer in terms of capacity and range.

It’ll be interesting to see how they are deployed.
