Plans are going ahead for what is being touted as the “Night Tube” – providing London Underground services 24 hours a day between Friday and Sunday.
The plans call for the service to commence from 12th September 2015 and will be available on certain lines:
- Piccadilly Line between London Heathrow Airport T-123 and T5 (not T4) and Cockfosters – No service on the Uxbridge Branch
- Central Line between Loughton and Hainualt to Ealing Broadway
- Northern Line between High Barnet, Edgware and Morden.
- Jubilee Line between Stanmore and Stratford
- Victoria Line between Walthomstow Central and Brixton
The plans call for a six train an hour service through the core of London, which all of the above go through. The Northern Line will have 8 trains an hour between Leicester Square and Camden Town to provide extra capacity.
A nice map below by Transport for London shows it a lot better:

Night tube services will run 24 hours on Fridays and Saturdays.
The plans have been made available to the media, with the Unions finding out about it at the same time – which hasn’t pleased them
However for Londoners, visitors to London and those arriving at Heathrow Airport early in the morning, or departing early, this is a way to get to the heart of the city without breaking the bank.
A positive thing to see – as long as the Unions don’t decide to have yet another strike about it.

Turning on ‘ultimate chisel’ mode, if you have an early morning flight (e.g. 6-8 departure) from LHR, and were going to be up early anyway this will radically increase the value of a travelcard or oyster daily capping the day before in London.
Assuming the standard rule prevails = valid for any journey start time up to 0430 the following morning, you could jump on the Piccadilly line just before 0430, arrive at 0530 at LHR etc. for zero cost.
Certainly a lot more appealing that the N9 night bus for chiseling!
