The Broadway Hotel in Blackpool whipped up a storm with it charging £100 if people placed negative reviews on TripAdvisor.
Well it seems the hotel has had a change of heart according to the BBC, who will refund the £100 charge.
The hotel said in a statement:
“We exercised this policy with Mr and Mrs Jenkinson as we felt extremely upset by their actions and insulting comments towards our staff.
“We agree there is room for improvement at our establishment and we desperately want to turn things around.”
Whilst this could be a motivator to improve the hotel, I strongly suspect that a shot from Blackpool Trading Standards warning that this action could be illegal somehow playing into this to, as well as the national and international coverage the story is getting.
Still, for the couple involved, at least they got the £100 refunded. But it shows that trying to shut down bad opinions with a fine can sometimes lead to bad consequences…
