Earlier this month I wrote about Iberia offering auction pricing to upgrade my flight.
Well it seems Iberia want to offer me something different now, with an Iberia Upgrade:
Well, what should come through the email box but this:
So the new option:
- Cabin Upgrade from Economy Class to Business Class aboard an A330 for €500 all in for one segment (MAD-ORD).
- Upgrade is for outbound segment only
- Minimal to no chance getting the uplifted Avios/Tier Point bonuses – only base Economy Tier Points/Avios.
Whilst not as low as the lowest possible bit on €450), it does work out about £366/$567 (excluding any forigen transaction fees).
There is a chance there’s no space, and it is subject to confirmation and payment, but it is tempting. On the other hand, as I’m not hitting the ground running in Chicago, I don’t exactly need the comfort trappings (although on the way home, that’s a different matter completely).
I think it’s reasonable value…. but what do you think? Thoughts and comments in the box below.

I think it is a good value considering the time flight and also the favourable euro to gbp exchange rates 😀
I hope you get something along these lines or cheaper on the way back

Easy to be swayed by an offer like this, Are you able to see the ecomomy load at all, you may get a spare seat next to you anyway if the plane is not full, On the other hand they may be looking for paid upgrades because economy is oversold, might be an idea not to check in on line & see what happens at the airport, might get an operational upgrade for free…

We recently flew the MAD>ORD on IB. The hard product is very nice – comfortable. The crew is great – but the soft product isn’t the best. Their Michelin Star meals aren’t. But for the extra space on a 9 hour flight… I’d say the cost is worth it. On our flight, the business cabin was not full.

I think it’s pretty expensive. KLM charges around €250 on a similar flight (in my case CUR-AMS), but that’s only offered at check-in.
I would do it for a night time flight, since it enables you to sleep. During the day, I couldn’t care less where I’m seated.

I always compute upgrades to about $50 per hour of discomfort so this 500 euros is about right. The better way to convince yourself is to price the business class seat for your upcoming trip and then realize you are saving thousands by taking their offer in email form as opposed to outright purchase.
