Got a two pin Apple Power adapter? It might be recalled…

29/01/2016 by Kevincm

I know a lot of us travel with Apple products (be it MacBooks, MacBook Airs, Macbook Pros, iPhones and iPads)… and to help along the way, some of you might had purchased a worldwide adaptor kit like this:

Or you’d be using your adapter you got with your device.

Well it seems some of power adapters have been bit more shocking than intended, with Apple announcing a recall of the two prong adaptors.

The risk it seems that due to some of them were at risk of breaking, creating a risk of electrical shock if touched.

These adapters were manufactured between 2003 to 2015, and  sold with products. The countries and territories these offending adaptors designed for include:

  • Australia
  • Argentina
  • Brazil
  • Continental Europe
  • Korea
  • New Zealand

It is pretty easy to identify adaptors that need to be replaced. Here’s an image showing the differences:

If your adapter has numbers instead of letters, the adapter need to be replaced.

These can be found on laptop chargers, as well certain iOS products (such as iPads).

Apple have provided a useful list of the affected adapters:

Note that adapters designed for the following countries are unaffected and are not being recalled:

  • China
  • Japan
  • United Kingdom
  • United States
  • Apple USB Adapters

Apple will be swapping out affected adapters free of charge. You’ve got some reasonable choices including:

  • Head to an Apple Store and get it swapped at the Genius Bar.
  • Head to an Apple Authorised Service Provider to get the adapter swapped
  • Request a replacement via the web site.

Yes, it is nothing short of a right royal pain that you will need to get your adapter replaced. But in this case – do yourself a favour and get them replaced as soon as possible.

Nothing is nastier – and as dangerous – as an electric shock.
