We all know and love the Airbus A380 as a big people moving people machine – but there’s always room for adding more seats aboard it with what Airbus calls “smart design”.
The design change is involves the removal of the rear spiral staircase, and installing a straight staircase. This allows toilet and galley modules to be moved around, creating more space for seats.

However, if you take a close look at the image above and do a seat-count across the row, Airbus is proposing this as the 11 across economy formation that was showcased at Aircraft Interiors Expo 2015.

So far, no airline has publicly declared they are installing 11 across seating aboard A380s. Should airlines choose to deploy the new back staircase onboard an A380 and maintain the current 10 across seating used, this will increase capacity by 11 seats.
Still for airlines looking to sweat their A380 assets – it’s a way of adding extra capacity to planes whilst using space aboard a plane more intelligently.
After all, however cavernous an A380 is – there’s only so much space on it before you run out of it…
