There is one thing that the European Union is good at regulating at – and its roaming fees on mobile phones when roaming inside the EU/EEA area.
The EU have capped roaming fees, and after the 30th April, the roaming charge excesses are reduced further.
The new fees are:
- €0.05 per minute of call made
- €0.02 per SMS sent
- €0.05 per MB of data
(All prices are excluding VAT, and taken out of any bundle you already have)
To compare with calls and data made before 30th April 2016:
- €0.19 per minute of call made
- €0.06 per SMS sent
- €0.20 per MB of data
Those are considerable savings. And the savings will continue for EU customers – because it seems roaming fees are going to be abolished inside the EU area from 15th June 2017.
Which as you guess is pleasing mobile phone companies no end.
The EU’s Digital Single Market has product a nice infographic to help:

Different mobile phone operators will be impacted in different ways – so it could be an idea to check where this is valid.
None the less, if you’re in Europe – prices are coming down. And for those visiting Europe from outside the EU/EEA zone – you might want to pick up a local SIM card to take advantage of the new pricing.
