From next Wednesday, British Airways will introduce its Buy On Board programme
British Airways A320 from Heathrow Tower – And as it’s short-mid haul aircraft, expect to pay for any food and beverage items aboard it as part of the Buy on Board programme. Image, Economy Class and Beyond.
So, a quick reminder to the Buy on Board programme:
- It’s going to start on the 11th January 2017
- It applies from routes from London Heathrow and London Gatwick
- It affects EuroTraveller and UK Domestic Cabins
- Payment is by card or via Avios for Bronze, Silver and Gold BA Executive Club Members
- Cash is not accepted
For those who want to look at the actual prices head here (food) or here (drink). For those who want to read on and find out what it’s going to cost… hang on.
Avios costs vary per item, and unless you’re Avios rich, I wouldn’t waste Avios on these.
Why?
Considering how few Avios you earn short-haul (and even fewer you earn on long haul routes) , it’s going to be a lot more difficult to save up for a reward flight saver.
Or let’s put this another way: A reward flight saver zone one is 4500 one way. Here are the equivalents of what you can buy for that:
- 7 and half Bacon rolls
- 17.6 bottles of water
- 15 Cups of in-flight hot drink
- 20 packs of Percy Pigs
- 2.2 Bottles of Monopole BlueTop
- 5.8 Gin and Tonics
And so on. Think about it before you reach for you Executive Club Card to pay for your food aboard British Airways
So without further ado, here how much things will cost in the Buy on Board Programme.

The prices aren’t hot, but at least the majority of items are under £5 for food, £3 for a soft drink or £6 for a mixed beverage.
However, whilst I can see a rationale for food being offered for sale, British Airways have constantly failed to offer a good quality explanation why drinks are being charged for.
It’s another nail in the “To Fly, To Serve” Strategy.

What’s the difference between BA and an LCC these days on a short haul flight? As someone in the North of England I can’t find anything to justify travelling to Heathrow or Gatwick for a flight with them instead of using a LCC closer to home.

You tell me -apart from a pittance of “loyalty” points, and a long haul feed, I can’t find any reason to fly BA short haul (bar cheap redemptions) these days until the curse of Cruz is lifted.
And to be honest, I’m still not sure how this can be a success in any form. Turning anything from a complimentary item to a revenue stream always ends badly.
