It seems the UK is following the USA with its formal announcement of an electronics ban in the passenger cabin of a plane.
Good luck using this when flying to the UK or US from certain countries – Image, Economy Class and Beyond
Large devices such affected include:
- Cameras
- Laptops
- DVD players
- Tablet computers
- Portable game consoles
- Any electronic device larger than 16cm in length, 9.3cm width & 1.5cm depth
Any device listed above or above the size limits must be checked in, and not be carried in hand luggage.
So, this will hit carriers – both based in the UK and beyond. The six carriers affected UK carriers are:
- British Airways
- EasyJet
- Jet2.com
- Monarch
- Thomas Cook
- Thomson
Meanwhile, the eight carriers based overseas that are subject to the ban are:
- Turkish Airlines
- Pegasus Airways
- Atlas-Global Airlines
- Middle East Airlines
- Egyptair
- Royal Jordanian,
- Tunis Air
- Saudia
The ban affects those coming to the UK, rather than departing it.
Interestingly, this does not affect Qatar Airways, Emirates or Ethiad who were hit by the US Large Electronics ban.
According to BBC News, A UK government spokesperson said:
“Decisions to make changes to our aviation security regime are never taken lightly.
“We will not hesitate to act in order to maintain the safety of the travelling public and we will work closely with our international partners to minimise any disruption these new measures may cause.”
Now more than ever, it’s important you check with the airline what you can carry, what you cannot and how much of it.

Editors note:
We’re waiting for the full text from the government statement to appear on an official source.
What is completely bananas now, is whilst the devices are now out of hand, there will be a lot of unsupervised lithium batteries in the hold of the plane. If one of those batteries has a thermal runway… well, I wouldn’t want to think of the outcome.
Sadly, I suspect there is a lot more to come from this story.

As a photographer, I’m really glad I have insurance. In the past I’ve had check-in staff more than happy for me to break the weight limit on hand luggage because they don’t want the risk of lenses and other equipment getting broken in the hold.

Maybe this is a transatlantic scheme by baggage handlers who want more valuables to steel. Nothing like having to put every valuable electronic in the hold
