Community – A wrap-up to Doughnuts on the Mound
In this epic day trip (and it twas epic)
- Spotting for the day? Why not?
- Morning Manoeuvres at Birmingham Airport
- EI263 Birmingham Airport to Dublin Airport
- Donughts on the Mound… and a LOT of planes
- Back to Dublin Airport
- EI3276 Dublin to Birmingham Airport
- Cheap ride home sir?
- Community
The first part of this comes directly from the post I wrote when I got home from Dublin.
Today gave me a realisation of one of the reason why I love taking to the air and travelling to places.
It’s people and community that make the aviation hobby – or the #avgeek hobby the a lot of the fun that it is.
Today, I went to Dublin for a fly-in, doughnuts and plane watching.
Whilst that may sound boring to some of you – that wasn’t all the reason for me to go. It was to meet people, to translate Twitter handles into real people and to chat about a common interest we all have.
You’d swear there’s an #avgeek or 2 around. Cameras out for an @AerLingus 330 at @DublinAirport. @Wall3gurl @EconomyBeyond @Michaelkelly707 pic.twitter.com/vwC9iZ00DL

In these sort of events, egos are set aside as we share and enjoy our passion for aviation.
Great day at the avgeek DUB “donuts on the mound” meet up 😎✈

And sometimes, that’s missing when we’re doing the drudgy morning commute from A to B on a clapped out plane.
My thanks to @ailbhegavin, @KoifeAiernan, @Wall3gurl, @Flyingpilot79, @MegatronCox , @Essiejosie , @747pete , @Ekbalco ,, @dylan_tobin , @IrishAero and @LiigaAndrzej for one of the best days out I’ve had in years.
Extra special thanks to @Essiejosie and @Wall3gurl for organsing, and for @MegatronCox being queen of coffee.
And of course to Ryanair, Aer Lingus, British Airways, Stobart Air, Delta, United and many more airlines for providing the images and the noise.
And reminding that both the frequent fly and #avgeek communities are more alike than I thought when it comes two passions – travelling and planes.
So some one line reviews:
Aer Lingus Mainline – it seems things are improving after last year’s performance. Much friendly, much more welcoming… and no annoying ex Virgin Little Red Seats.
Aer Lingus Regional seem to have a reasonable product on the short-haul segments it serves with a bang-up-to-date ATR72-600. Combined with the Acro Series 3 seat, it’s a good plane.
That’s your lot for a few weeks. There’s a little trip which I’m still putting together…. and then we come up the big trip of the year.
And I mean big.
Please join me in Premium Tier Point Madness: To Singapore with Qatar Airways, British Airways and TBA.
TBA? That isn’t an airline.
Correct grasshopper. It isn’t. I’m still working on building the trip. And you’ll also notice the word “Premium”.
Or let me put it another way… yes. I’m back in Business Class on a long haul flight.
Let the chaos commence 😉
Until then, thank you for reading this trip report! 🙂
