Virgin Blue goes for an upgrade – orders 50 737-800’s to start with…

01/04/2010 by Kevincm

Virgin Blue seems to have a bit of money to splash with. After negotiating with Boeing, in the first instance they’re purchasing 50 brand new 737-800’s with 20 options and another 30 purchasing rights, taking it to a total of 105 aircraft possible.

The aircraft are swappable for 737-700’s or 737-900’s if needed.

Whilst the price of course has not been disclosed, they quote that they’re paying less than the 2001 price for the same aircraft. Deliveries of these new aircraft will begin  in June 2011 to sometime in 2017.

Well it’s nice to see that Virgin unlike a certain other operator of 737-800’s can talk to its suppliers and cut a deal for some nice new aircraft. It also puts Virgin Blue in a ready growth position which will be needed in the next few years.
