It seems the current administration really wants to turn the screws for taxes, with a new aviation policy in the offing.
Now whilst most of us couldn’t give two tosses what’s in it (least of all Heathrow will be ignored, expansion ignored, etc etc etc), this gem comes from Theresa Villiers, Minister of State for Aviation
“It is not inconceivable that our tax reform might look at a higher tax to fly from congested south east airports”
The aim being to boost regional traffic, and balance out heavy hits the London Airports take for most of the international traffic. According to the minister:
“A key part of our approach is to create conditions for regional airports to flourish, and this also has the potential to help relieve overcrowding at south east airports,” she adds.
Ok. Lets take a step back here HM Government. When you go abroad and ask people the first UK city they think of, it isn’t Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast or Birmingham.
It isn’t any of the regional airports like East Midlands, Norwich, Bristol, Aberdeen or Blackpool.
So Minister for Aviation, what is this apart from a possible taxation exercise that will create MORE confusion to the visitor and traveller departing from the United Kingdom?
Of course, since no government minister would actually admit to it being a taxation exercise, this is moot really….
