AA: Buys new 777’s, opts for the 300ER’s….

19/01/2011 by Kevincm

It seems American Airlines has decided maybe it’s time to invest in expanding it’s international growth, and has ordered two Boeing 777-300ER’s from the options it has with Boeing.

Subject to contracts being firmed up and local issues, these aircraft are due for delivery in latter part of 2012.

This makes AA a rarity in the USA – the first carrier to use 777-300ER’s (Air Canada beat it to the punch some time ago ordering 777-300ER’s for their long haul fleet)

The 777-300ER’s have a larger capacity and will allow American a bit of growth at slot constrained airports, or on routes where they need more capacity on longhaul routes – or even to release other aircraft onto other runs whilst maintaining the new aircraft on traditional routes.

They follow fellow OneWorld member British Airways who is a recent convert to 777-300ER operations.
