Earlier this week a Spanish court ruled that Ryanair’s £40 charge to reprint a left at home boarding pass was “illegal”, with court stating “the carrier was breaking international law by charging the fee, stating that the responsibility for printing boarding passes has always rested with the airlines.”
That obviously went down like a lead brick at Ryanair HQ, how today have hit back with one hell of a threat: If the judgement stands, Ryanair will turn away passengers arriving at check in without their pre-printed boarding pass.
Yes, you read that right.
Again, it boils down to costs as ground handling people seem to cost money – something that Ryanair doesn’t like spending (whilst it will happily collect every coin under the sun)
In the exact words of Ryanair the ruling is:
“bizarre and unlawful ruling”
and the threat in full:
“(Ryanair will) dispense with the boarding card reissue fee altogether, and passengers who arrive at the airport without the agreed pre-printed boarding card will not be able to pass through security or board their aircraft”.
“(Ryanair )confident that this ruling will be overturned on appeal”, and stressed that “in the meantime the boarding card reissue fee will continue to be applied at all Ryanair airports for this tiny number of passengers who do not comply with their agreement to arrive at the airport with their online boarding card”.
If you ever needed a reason to avoid this airline, and don’t think you can play by it’s rules, there are plenty of other airlines out there – and offering better value too.
Personally: this is just Ryanair being Ryanair saying to everyone: “If you don’t like the way we do business – tough…”
