Oh dear. It seems the use of Passport Security Gates is being suspended at Manchester Airport is being suspended due to software issues.
And it’s a damming software issue as a couple swapped passports and exited through the gates without an issue.
These biometric scanners work on facial recognition – and seem to have failed badly here.
The UK Border Agency says
“Following the incident, the gates at Manchester are suspended and we are reviewing the circumstances of this incident.”
“The UK Border Agency is responsible for checking passengers arriving in the UK and takes this responsibility extremely seriously.
“We are working with the manufacturer of the gates installed at Manchester to learn lessons for the future.”
This system is a step on from the IRIS system that used to exist – rather than using an IRIS picture, it now uses the Biometric information that is gathered within a passport using scanned information
Other airports at the moment are unaffected, however it is damming the system has failed in the first place. Obviously this is going to be yet another expensive exercise in software upgrades and money spending…..
