Dutch Railways to introduce “Emergency Plastic Relief Bags”

07/10/2011 by Kevincm

Umm. Are we sure it’s not April 1st? Oh dear. In this case, it’s probably true.

This up on the BBC News site, who note that the Dutch National Railways (Nederlandse Spoorwegen), is to add plastic bags as part of a first aid provision on some services.

What you’ll be doing in these bags… well.. is it to provide an emergency place to urinate. Or to put it bluntly – Wee Bags.

(checks diary again. Nope. October 8th here…)

The bags will be deployed on commuter trains – 16% of the NS fleet that do not have on-board toilets, and used in cases of Power Failures and other emergencies.

Jeroen von Geusau, spokesperson for NS Rail says

“When you have to wait three or four hours on a train, then it is quite logical you have some people aboard who need to go to a restroom,”

“It is like when a plane is circling above London for two hours.”

A firm called “Travel John” is to supply the bags, which is attached to a spout and filled with a powdered substance that turns into a gel.  Which is … well… yes….

This hasn’t gone down well surprisingly with the female commuters, the driers, and to be honest, I wouldn’t be too happy either. NS Rail in the future is to consider new stock with toilets, but this would be from 2015. Which is an awful long time if you’ve got to go…..
