American Airlines to retire up to 11 757’s…

11/10/2011 by Kevincm

According to Flight, it seems that American Airlines are modifying their fleet. with the carrier announcing it is to remove up to 11 757-200’s from service during 2012.

As part of an effort to reduce capacity, it’s retiring 11 birds due to due to costs, jet fuel costs, and of course, the economy (when in doubt, blame the economy)..

Speaking of fuel prices, a hedge of $29 million will have to be paid out. Foreign exchange doesn’t help wit ha $22 million charge taken to them for that too.

American has been suffering recently, with the vultures trying to circle to get the company to go into Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. American states this is not their preference or goal.

Is it enough to retire 11 birds to stave this off? I’m not sure. On the plus side, demand for 757-200’s seems to remain strong still, and no doubt, another company will snap them up quickly. Failing that, parting them out will make a few pennies…
