Gulf Air takes an axe to some of its services

14/02/2012 by Kevincm

Following hot on the heels of Royal Jordanian, Gulf Air is now getting ready to wield the axe on some of its services.

Up for the chop are:

  • Athens (Ceases 12th March 2012)
  • Damascus  (Ceases 2nd March 2012)
  • Milan (Ceases 12th March 2012)
  • Kuala Lumpur (Ceases 25th March 2012)

Entebbe and Geneva have also been cut too.

Gulf Air cites issues with the Bahrain political situation, high fuel prices and low passenger numbers as the reasons for these cuts.

And as to reiterate the problem that Royal Jordanian is suffering the same message is coming out from Gulf Air – close the routes that aren’t making cash, focus on higher passenger and higher yield traffic.

The big question however is “Can the smaller carriers stand up to the big guns of Emriates, Qatar or Eithad now – or are we about to see consolidation in the Gulf and Middle East area?”
