Lufthansa is slowly moving forward to delivery of it’s new Boeing 747-8 Intercontinentals with some interesting titbits of information released today.
Firstly, Lufthansa is expecting it’s first delivery towards the end of April, at a delivery rate of five 747-8i’s a year.
For Lufthansa, these new birds will feature a new business class seat which will have a flat bed installed in it as opposed to a sloapy lie-flat bed that is has installed in its long haul fleet – even the new A380’s.
In terms of destinations for the 747-8I fleet – expect them to be based at Frankfurt, and operating to “the US East Coast” and “India”.
Exact destinations are of course to be confirmed.
On top of this, the refurb of the long haul fleet to take the new flat beds will begin. However, for those of you hoping to score a new seat… you’ve got a four year period between the first installation and the last seat installed.
Expect a round of seat roulette soon enough….

This information has been around for weeks! 😉

You also say that they’ve decided on the regions? yes, they have confirmed that the 747-8i will fly where previous 744’s have flown, so there’s no real surprise that it could fly to the US or India….or Asia or Middle East or anywhere.
My money is on FRA-JFK. The first LH 747-8i is registered D-ABYA as was their first ever 747. That first 747 flew FRA-JFK, and IMHO I think it will be a fitting tribute for D-ABYA the “second” to follow in her ancestor’s flight path.
