IAG and Iberia are pushing the launch of Iberia Express, which is due to commence on Sunday 25th March with the aim to “restore profitability to short and medium-haul routes”
Formed as a chance to take on the now dead Spanair, and to attempt to offer a higher value proposition than some Low Cost carriers, there is a fair olde list of destinations up for grabs.
The first routes (all domestic) are:
- Alicante
- Malaga
- Palma
- Seville
Onwards domestically, you can also expect the following to be added:
- Fuerteventura
- Granada
- Ibiza
- Lanzarote
- Malaga
- Minorca
- Santiago de Compostella
- Vigo
International Destinations are also in Ibera Express’s future as well with
- Amsterdam
- Dublin
- Riga
- Mikonos
- Naples
- Riga
Services will be operated with two-class A320 aircraft, with Business Class set as a standard EuroBusiness product (empty middle seat) and economy class down the back.
For those who need their Tier Points, Iberia Express will be a OneWorld affiliate member, so points are on the cards.
The birth of Iberia Express has been especially hard as it has been at the centre of a lot of strike action by SELPA. The Spanish government has stepped in to appoint of a mediator to help sort the mess out – and allow Iberia Express to launch. The current strike action that was due to occur over the Easter Break has been suspended – giving the travelling public a chance to fly in peace over the period.
