Remember Flight QF32?
18 months, ago, a Qantas Airbus A380 – VH-OQA “Nancy Bird Walton” experienced an uncontained engine failure over Batam in 2010, and had to limp back Singapore.
As we all know, there were no injuries… save for the airplane itself.
Well it’s take 18 months of repairs, but it seems Nancy Bird is ready to take to the air again after extensive repairs to the aircraft.
The aircraft, will be flown back to Australia from Singapore on 21 April.
The Australian investigators have finished collecting data for the investigation into the uncontained failure of the Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engine, allowing for repairs to be completed.
It’s been a sedate life for Qantas’s first Airbus A380 which has entered service in 2008, only to go out of service for 18 months which has caused no end of embarrassment to Airbus, Rolls Royce and Qantas – but it seems Qantas is still going along the line of “never loosing an aircraft – except when they sell it”.
The estimated $135 million repair bill is covered by insurance costs, with a $100 million payout from Rolls Royce in compensation.
