It seems another airport is standing up to Ryanair…. dread the thought, as BAA has failed to agree with Ryanair over an agreement to extend it’s current five-year base there on more competitive terms.
The current agreement expires in October 2012.
As a result, Ryanair are dropping five routes:
- Bratislava
- Bremen
- Frankfurt-Hann,
- Fuerteventura
- Gothenburg
- Kaunas
- Lodz
- Poznan
Ryanair operates on very low costs and low cost agreements, and thus will play airports off against each other for traffic, at the cost of fees. However, it seems Edinburgh Airport wants none of this it seems, and wants money amazingly.
Ryanair has also got out its bluster quote-o-matic, stating:
“BAA has no interest in securing the future of Scottish tourism, traffic and jobs as it artificially increases charges in the hope of making a killing on the sale of the airport for its Spanish shareholders”
From the Winter timetable, Ryanair will operate 17 routes with 108 flights a week.
In its usual tone, Ryanair will reconsider reversing the decision providing
“…a competitive and realistic cost offer becomes available from BAA Edinburgh”.
So the question now is this: Will Edinburgh hold its nerve and tell Ryanair where to go… or will they give in at the last minute to the charms of this airline?
Well, there’s hope if BAA Edinburgh say no. Manchester Airport was big enough to say no to Ryanair, and there was a partial withdrawal… that was reversed a year and a bit later.
Lets the games commence…
