BMI is currently running a 20% bonus Destination Miles promotion on purchases of miles.
Whilst in the past this was reasonably exciting, there is an interesting wrinkle on the horizon – the creation of a transfer tool from BMI Diamond Club to British Airways Avios.
So the idea is this:
- Buy your miles
- Wait till the 3rd July
- Convert them to Avios
So why is this semi exciting?
Cost per mile, buying via BMI will be cheaper!
- 24,000 miles through BMI costs £255
- 24,000 Avios will set you back £399
Obviously, there are a few caveats – namely you haven’t brought your allocation of BMI miles just yet. You can buy lower quantities of miles and get a bonus pro-rata, however the numbers above include the £15 purchasing fee. Therefore your value per mile is diminished if you buy lower amounts.
For those needing a top up before the end of Star Alliance redemptions, this is probably the best chance to do it, as your deadline for ticketing those redemptions is 30th May.
For those with the Chase 100,000 Avios bonus who scoff at this promotion, a little note. The best UK credit cards will get 20,000 miles (which happen to be BMI and AA – only of first application). Whilst the Llyods TSB Avios card seemed reasonable, there were some major issues with in
Meanwhile the BA Credit Cards by American Express have comparatively poor sign-up bonuses at the moment – the “free” version gets a massive 1,000 Avios, whilst the paid version gets you 6,000 Avios.
So if promos like this turn up, take them and use them whilst you can!

See – I can talk about airline points occasionally 😉

Slightly more expensive than buying MR @2.5cpp and transferring to BA with 50% bonus.

Sadly, not all of us have Amex issued Charge cards and doing it via Member Rewards. Whilst this is a great method to get more Miles/Avios, for those of us who just have Visa or Mastercard (rare I know – I left Amex after a disagreement with them last year over a credit card), this represents one of the easier ways of getting miles.
The other options are of course to stay at lots of Hilton hotels or dread the thought – fly 😉

Thanks for a great workaround tip. I already had some bmi miles ready to transfer into Avios but just added another 24000 using this deal.

when booking with cash and points, in certain destinations, you can “buy” points as low as US1.3CPP, much better deal.
