BMI Baby is starting to wind down with the first set of routes now “suspended” – with a major hit for Belfast City Airport loosing BMI Baby service entirely, and Birmingham Airport and East Midlands Airport being reduced to holiday routes mainly.
The routes that have now gone:
Belfast City Airport (BHD) to:
- Alicante,
- Amsterdam,
- Birmingham,
- East Midlands,
- Faro,
- Ibiza
- Mahon
- Malaga
- Palma
- London Stanstead
Birmingham Airport (BHX) to:
- Amsterdam
- Belfast City
- Knock
East Midlands Airport (EMA) to:
- Amsterdam
- Belfast City
- Edinburgh
- Geneva
- Glasgow
- Newquay
- Nice
- Paris
That’s one hell of a draw-down of service, with a lot of business routes withdrawn – whilst leaving the leisure routes seemingly unaffected. Additionally, there was a lot of competition on these routes that BMI Baby couldn’t cope with.
Some airlines have stepped in already to fill the capacity with FlyBe looking at the UK Domestic and regional traffic, Easyjet and Ryanair picking the end trails, and KLM boosting its frequencies at Birmingham to cover the loss of 2 services a day.
Even then, it’s sad to see an airline being run down. It’s even sadder for the people employed by BMI Baby who are hopefully looking at other airlines for employment – rather than stuck on the dole queue.
