Delta is the process of rationalising and tidying its network at the moment, and up for the chop is the direct Detroit – Hong Kong route.
The route will be suspended from 29th August .
Delta is blaming the cost of fuel and the fluctuations in demand for this ultra-long haul trip – which isn’t surprising considering the length of these ultra-long haul flights (13 hours or so).
This is also part of Delta’s efforts to reduce its overall network capacity by almost 4% to match supply with demand.
If you’re booked to fly after 29th August, expect to reaccommodated on other Delta services and rerouted via Tokyo Narita (where Delta has a hub).
And as such, expect a longer journey. Mileage runners might be happy as this bumps up your miles in the air from 7857 miles to 8239 miles – a near enough 5% bonus….

Cathay and United will be happy about this.
