It seems in-flight WiFi is the rage of the season, with Delta (who offer WiFi on its US Domestic services via Gogo) now wanting to offer WiFi on international services.
Where as the WiFi for US Domestic is operated on a Ground to Air Technology (using a version of EV-DO), for International flights, it’ll be an Air to Satellite product (a KU-Band) – again offered by GoGo.
The installation and rollout will begin next year, targeting over 150 of Delta’s long haul birds including:
- Airbus A330’s
- Boeing 777’s,
- Boeing 767’s
- Boeing 747’s
- Selected Boeing 757 aircraft (Internationally configured aircraft as opposed to Domestic ones which have WiFi installed in the already)
A rather extensive roll-out as you can see. There will be a long wait for the aircraft modifications to be complete, with the final out of the door sometime in 2015.
By that point, Delta and its Delta Connection partners will be offering up Wifi on around 1,000 aircraft. Obviously, it’s a bit too soon to say which routes and which aircraft will get Long Haul WiFi first.
Now, about power at every seat to power my device that is using WiFi please…..
