Odd hobbies of the day: Rebuilding a Rolls Royce RB-211 engine (747 engine) in your garden

01/08/2012 by Kevincm

Ok, we all have hobbies – some odder than others (for example, I have a relationship with my Raspberry Pi that is bordering on questionable at the moment), but I think I’ve found someone who has… well.

Justin Woolgar is one of those people that likes to learn and fiddle – and he’s fiddling with a Rolls Royce RB-211 engine in his back yard.

Now for those of you who wonder what one of those is, it’s basically the engine that powered the Lockheed L-1011, The Boeing 747-100/-200/-300/-400 series, Boeing 757-200,  Boeing 767-300 and some Tupolev Tu-204’s. It’s derivatives (the Rolls Royce Trent Engine Series) are in service today on the Airbus A330, A340, A380, and the Boeing 777-200 and 787 Series.

So, it’s an important engine which even today powers a lot of aircraft in the world

This RB-211 was recovered from an ex TWA Lockheed L1011, and returned to a running state at a home – and well, have a look below.

Well we all have hobbies, and that’s one hell of an impressive hobby. Justin has a great page about the project, as well as all the other engines he’s worked on at http://jetpropulsion.co.uk/

Speaking of Raspberry Pi’s, if I get my hands another one, it may be offered up as a prize for you techies out there… 😉

What are you doing with your Pi? I got mine just the other day.

A fair mix of things depending on my mood. I’m planning to use it as a XMBC Client when I get round to it. Although sticking Android 4.0 (ICS) on it is a useful step – would allow for a simple client to get stuff done on

Saying that, some of the automation projects I’ve seen are amazing. There’s a lot of power in those things, and considering the size of them… I could imaging running some home control through it too.

Or I could have it powering a permanent departures board in the flat 😉

Oh Man! I’ve been trying to get my hands on an R-Pi for months! Looks like something fun to tinker with!

I waited time for mine. A fair amount of time. This is worth almost another post y’know with some serious geeking. Anyone up for that?

Hell yes, I’m considering buying one, just for the sake of tinkering with it and seeing what it can do, so yes, I’m all for a raspberry Pi related post.

back ontopic: I love the sound an RB211 engine makes.

Those RR engines do have a lovely noise as they warm up and head down the runway (says someone who enjoys the sound of the RR Trent 700’s on the A330s).

As for a Raspberry Pi topic… I might put something together next week. Alas, I’ve got a duff SD card at the moment, so I’ve had to stop work on it for a bit 🙁 Rather annoying really as I remembered where I left my USB Keyboard last night…
