Frankfurt bore the brunt of strike action today, with Lufthansa cabin crew aligned with the UFO Union walking out from 05:00CET to 13:00CET today.
Flights to and from Frankfurt airport have been hit due to planes already stuck at the airport with little parking space left, causing major cancellations.
Out of the 840 flights that Lufthansa operates out of Frankfurt, 360 of them were cancelled – representing most of the short and medium haul programme with a few long haul flights affected.
The full cancellation list is at http://www.lufthansa.com/online/portal/lh/de/info_and_services/irregularities/canceled_flights?nodeid=3494927&l=en&cid=18002.
Disruption at major German airports, – Munich, Berlin and Hamburg has been limited, but are suffering from the knock on effect of the major hub not being avalible.
Impact of the strike will continue due planes now being in the wrong places, and timetables out of kilter.
The UFO Union is strike due to pay, and are hunkering down for a long fight, stating they could not rule out futher strike action. According to UFO head Nicolye Baublies talking to ARD in Germany
“That depends on the behaviour of Lufthansa… We are ready to act at any moment, anywhere in Germany, by announcing our action six hours in advance.”
Expect more trouble sooner rather than later.
