Wizz Air have decided in their wisdom that their trial to charge for large hand baggage items was a success, and now wishes to roll out the programme to the rest of its routes from 24th October 2012.
If you’re honestly surprised… well… this is Wizz Air.
The €10 charge is to “encourage” Wizz Air’s passengers to take small bags of up to 42cm x 32cm x 25cm. Anything larger up to the large size of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm than that will be subject to a €10 charge.
The fee was trialled on the London Luton-Katowice route from August 1, in an effort to combat what the airline saw as too many bags aboard (despite the airline having a one bag rule), and preventing offloading, delays and space.
Note the €10 charge is if you book ahead. Those of you rocking up to the airport with a “large bag” will be paying the princely sum of €45. Those who rock up at the gate with a magicaly expanded back will face €65 charge.
Ouch.
To aid people to adjust, the weight limit of 10kg/bag for hand luggage has been dropped with bags as heavy as needed as long as you are able to lift them safely and place them in the overhead bins. In addition, from the 24th October, fares will be discounted by €4 – the same day the policy goes in effect.
Or of course, there are other options. It’s always worth looking around…

This is awesome. One of my pet peeves is when people try to shove oversize bags into the overhead compartments when you know that thing is never going to fit. Charge for it!
