There are various pleasures in travelling down the back – one of which is the 3-3-3 or the 2-5-2 setup in a Boeing 777.
However, airlines are seeking to make life more hellish have been introducing 10 across seating (3-4-3 seating) down the back of planes.
A quick off the top of my head list includes:
- Air France/KLM
- Air New Zealand
- American Airlines (new 777-300ER product)
- Emirates
- Etihad
- TAM
Well it seems other operators are going to squeeze (quite literally) into the seats down the back with Aeroflot and Jet Airways who operates Boeing 777-300ER are to adopt the denser 3-4-3 seating layout, whilst not increasing the leg room
The numbers don’t sound a lot but that extra inch or so adds up:
Airline Config Pitch Width AA 2-5-2 32.0" 18.0" BA 3-3-3 31.0" 17.5" Air NZ 3-4-3 32.0" 17.1" Emirates 3-4-3 33.0" 17.0"
Data: Seatguru.
In addition, the isles are MUCH tighter in these aircraft, just making them feel very cramp.
Looking further at the new guilty parties who seem to be interested in extracting as much cash as possible rather than caring about passenger comfort:
Aeroflot – will be introducing new Boeing 777-300ER’s into service from February 2013. Those of a nervous disposition should look away as they plan to cram 402 passengers on a plane in a config of:
- 30 in business class (2-2-2)
- 48 in premium economy (2-4-2)
- 324 in regular economy (3-4-3)
The other guilty party – Jet Airways will be reconfiguring its Boeing 777-300ER’s it has in its own service from 3-3-3 to 3-4-3 with the following seat count:
- 8 Seats in First (1-2-1)
- 30 Seats in Premiere Class (Business)
- 310 seats in the new Economy Configuration vs 274 currently
The first of Jet’s reconfigured Boeing 777-300ER’s s are set for introduction shortly, with them allegedly operating Delhi-London currently, whilst Mumbai-London service will join 10 across club this month (with some flights operating 9 across seating until the reconfiguration is complete).
Hmm. Taking the pleasure out of flying. These airlines seem to be doing this without any style what so ever….

OS also has 10 across

Another airline to avoid then…

10 across is just plain bad. I love the 2-5-2. For couples it’s great and for families of 4-5 it’s perfect. Here again is how many can we pack in and not what’s best. Starting to sound like the old L1011 cattle cars.

For true cattle, there’s always the A380. This is just squeezing passengers in to make an extra few pennies now and “be competitive”.
And yes, it does affect where my credit card number goes to secure a seat…

A similar story was published here today on the same aspects. Mind an HT? http://www.businesstraveller.com/news/aeroflot-and-jet-airways-join-ten-across-club

Will add in a notch.

Add Alitalia to the list. Flights to and from New York’s JFK airport and Rome on Alitalia’s 777 aircraft now have a 3-4-3 configuration in economy class.

You have no idea how infuriating this is to me. One airline decides to set a nasty precedent(Emirates), and the rest of the baboon-like herd follow suit. It’s like they just can’t help themselves. Human nature is such that it is always pushing the envelope, always looking to see how much it can get away with.
Long-haul airline travel has now become as unpleasant as taking a trip on a packed Greyhound bus from New York to Buffalo.
I barely survived on a Cathay Pacific 777-300ER from NY-BKK, and that was on a 3-3-3 seating configuration. I can only imagine how painful these new monstrosities will be.
Frankly, I am not only deeply disgusted, but very demoralized and disheartened. It’s getting to the point that we will soon have no choice but to suffer on any flight longer than 4 hours, as airlines seem to be in collusion, preventing us from picking and choosing.
The only thing I don’t understand is where is the federal government in all of this? Why are airlines allowed to cramp a cabin to dangerous levels like this, complete with aisles that are now so narrow you can barely walk through them??? Will there have to be a major incident causing numerous casualties for laws to be imposed on these greedy aviation hacks to stop them in their tracks?
