Saturday Alternative: How do you build an Airplane engine?

29/12/2012 by Kevincm

In light of the tragic crash in Moscow Vnukovo Airport today of a Redwings TU-204 with the loss of four people, I’m not putting up a safety video today.

Instead, I’m going to put something else up which might be interesting to a few of the readers here which on the BBC earlier this year – How to build a Jumbo Jet Engine*, which takes you behind the scenes at Rolls Royce Engines (Derby) to see what goes into making those power engines that allow you to take to the sky.

A great documentary – definitely worth a good hour of your time.

* Apparently, the BBC thinks the 787 is a Jumbo Jet. ‘Nuff said?

I was surprised to see that the 787 is considered a jumbo jet, so I googled the term.

I found this definition: A jumbo jet usually refers to a wide-body aircraft.

Also the Washington Post and Daily Mail each have stories referring to the 787 as a jumbo.

    Who would have guessed.

This video has been around for a while, but a great experience for those who’ve never seen it before. It may be a ‘BBC production,’ but it is 100% RR promo film and that’s OK. RR makes damn good engines. Thanks for posting it.

As the British would say, “Good Show”!
