According to some, it’s World Sleep Day today. So this is probably the flimsiest excuse I need to do a quick review of hotel beds I’ve wound up in. Lets start from the good and work slowly downward…..
Give me that bed! The Hyatt Regency Bed
As slept in Chicago and Atlanta.
As shot – a Double-Double in Chicago.
If there was a bed I wish I could I could get shipped to the UK without it breaking the bank, this is it. The right amount of bounce, firmness and comfort for me.
A bed with a view – The Intercontinental Strings, Shinagawa.
Whilst the bed was comfortable (and it got me through some heavy jetlag after arriving on the early morning ANA flight from Frankfurt, what this bed has is a view…
The well connected bed – Crowne Plaza, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong
If wanted to connect something – be it an iPod, a power supply for a computer or camera, this is a darn good bed to rest in. It’s also not bad on the back either.
Lets move onto beds that had the potential, but had little problems.
“A bit to Funky”- aLoft ExCeL, Docklands, London.
Well, it is an aLoft/Starwood/W/whatever brand, so it has a funkiness edge. The surrounds weren’t particularly indusive to sleep sadly, even if the bed was passable.
In the Hot Hot HOT! category – Hotel Savigny, Frankfurt
The bed wasn’t much cop (alas, a bit too soft for my liking), but the standout feature of this room was the room temperature… and how high it was! To say I lost a lot of sweat in the middle of winter was an understatement.
The Hey, it could be a LOT worse bed: Travelodge Swords Dublin
For €19, what do you expect. Clean and reasonable, and not soft at all. All good things. If you’re there in winter, bump up the thermostat on the heater and its a lovely little room.
And finally, Oh my god, how soft is this thing? The Holiday Inn Express Zurich Airport.
I’ll be honest – I felt like I was going to fall through this when I laid down as the mattress was so soft, with minimal support. Now, I’ve slept in all sorts of beds, and this is the worst of the lot sadly.
However, there is one bed I like – even though the mattress is showing signs of age, but is so comfortable… and it’s in the bed that’s in my bedroom at GhettoIFE towers. It’s the perfect height, the right firmness, has charging amenities and is always the right temperature when I get into it (or a few minutes thereafter). That and it’s 5 minutes to the bus stop, 15 minutes to town and always has a working power point to hand 😉
(and you’ll be spared a picture of it ;))
Happy World Sleep Day!
