FlyBe in talks of sale of slots

14/05/2013 by Kevincm

Flybe isn’t having a great time of it at moment and whilst its business model appears sound, it hasn’t been pulling in the profits – rather making losses.

The airline has been a source of speculation on the BBC – who are suggesting slots at Gatwick Airport could be sold, which has forced FlyBe to come out with a statement:

“Flybe notes the recent speculation in the press. The board announces that it is in discussions with a number of parties which may or may not lead to a transaction regarding the exchange for compensation payment of the arrival and departure slots at Gatwick airport.”

“Discussions are on-going and there can be no certainty as to whether any transaction will be forthcoming. A further announcement will be made as soon as appropriate.”

Press reports indicate that EasyJet could be the beneficiary of this sale.

FlyBe is regional carrier based in the UK, with operations targeting most regional airports – as well as Gatwick.

The airline also operates a joint venture with Finnair (FlyBe Nordic), with Logan Air being a fanchiesee.

If a sale was to occur, then I think some UK domestic operations could be under threat as these are high tax routes – for not much gain.

Whilst there are some who like FlyBe, I’m in the grouping where I can take or leave it. It might have something to do with a 1 hour delay I had on a mileage run….
