For those with some memory, British Airways introduced hand baggage only fares at Gatwick as a trial, and then extended the trial to all short-haul routes from that airport.
Well, bad news. The trial is now creeping its way to British Airway’s other bases at Heathrow at London City. In addition, new semi-flexible and full flex fares will be introduced.
So what are the unlucky routes where you’ll be able to get Hand baggage only fares:
From/To London Heathrow:
– Amsterdam
– Barcelona
– Edinburgh
– Glasgow
– Paris CDG
– Paris ORY
– Rome
– Rotterdam
– Stockholm
From/To London City:
– Amsterdam
– Edinburgh
– Glasgow
– Stockholm
From/To London Gatwick (Flex/SemiFlex fares)
– Amsterdam
– Barcelona
– Edinburgh
– Glasgow
– Rome
Existing Standard fares will continue to be available too.
Typically, Hand Baggage Only saves between £5-£10 per fare. It’s also important to note if you are an oneword elite, and you actively choose these fares at booking your oneworld baggage allowance does NOT apply.
Whilst BA present this as a way of segmenting and slicing its fares to the budget conscious carriers (and also bear in mind that BA allow 23KG hand luggage – which is more than enough for some people), I can’t help feel this cheapens the product.
It seems like its anything to win over customers from the Low-Cost Carriers.
Hand Baggage Only tickets are available from today (11th September), for travel from the 24th September onwards.
