From the airline that wagged a finger at you that smoking is not allowed, Delta has decided not to allow phone calls in flight
In a memo published on Delta by CEO Richard Anderson, he states
“Our customer research and direct feedback tell us that our frequent flyers believe voice calls in the cabin would be a disruption to the travel experience. In fact, a clear majority of customers who responded to a 2012 survey said they felt the ability to make voice calls onboard would detract from – not enhance – their experience. Delta employees, particularly our in-flight crews, have told us definitively that they are not in favor of voice calls onboard.”
Whilst the airline is happy about text, email and data communications – what it calls “silent communication” (So, someone hasn’t had an annoying text or email alert tone ever…), it seems voice is off the menu.
And that’s no bad thing in my book. Whilst the idea of voice communication in the sky is an interesting prospect, you will be sharing details of your life with 70 to 200 of your new best friends in the sky.
A bit of quiet in the sky is no bad thing to – it forces a disconnect from the world. Whilst in-flight WiFi seeks to reconnect us (which has great benefits), it’s not as “in your face” .. or rather “in your ear” than someone shouting down a phone at 37,000ft.
Rather like the big phone guy from Trigger Happy TV (skip to 0:30 seconds onwards…)
