Etihad to codeshare with JetBlue and Air Europa

22/01/2014 by Kevincm

Eithad continues along its way in adding more routes and more connections as they confirm they are to add codeshares with JetBlue.

Etihad is to place its EY flight codes on JetBlue operated flights from New York-JFK and Washington-IAD, covering 40 routes in the first instance. Later, routes between New York and destinations in the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Colombia will also be added

The addition of the codeshare will be subject to government approval, with plan for further codeshares when Etihad launches routes from Los Angeles

Etihad operate from Abu Dhabi to  Chicago New York-JFK and Washington-IAD daily. The airline also codeshares routes with American Airlines and Air Canada

Meanwhile in Europe, Air Europa (of Spain) will also be codesharing with Eithad, and commence a route between Madrid and Abu Dhabi in late 2014.

The new route will commence 3 times a week, operated by Air Europa with an Airbus A330, with the flight codeshared by Etihad.

As this is a more traditional code share, the Etihad EY code will be placed on flights from  Madrid from Amsterdam, Barcelona, Brussels and Milan Malpensa,  and Palma de Mallorca.  Meanwhile, Air Europa will place its UX code on flights on Etihad flights from Amsterdam, Brussels and Milan Malpensa to Abu Dhabi.

Future codeshare plans include Air Europa codes being placed on flights from Abu Dhabi to the Gulf Region, Africa, Asia and beyond, whilst Etihad will be looking for their code to appear  on flights within Spain to Central America and South America.

Whilst codeshares are nothing special (it adds another flight code to an existing flight), it does create options for flyers who want to travel on “just one ticket” between various points.

It also makes network maps look very pretty with places where people can go…

I wonder if this will equate to earning tier point/miles or just award miles. Only a handful of airlines Etihad codeshares (EY) with, will actually earn elite tier points/miles. :(..

Sadly, I suspect that it will be more of the same with limited cross earning.
