One of the things I’ve used to travel is having an amenity kit. It’s a very small thing that can make a big difference in travel in my opinion, especially on the long haul legs .
Delta today have launched a new amenity kit aimed at the economy class traveller.
Yes, you read that right – ECONOMY CLASS – them down the back of the plane (or where I commonly sit). It looks a bit like this:

So let’s see what we have here we’ll got some earplugs, blindfold, headphones and some water. Not the greatest kit around but better than nothing – which is what a lot North American carriers offer their customers (not naming names American Airlines, United, Air Canada, US Airways). Even then, all British Airways can offer is a toothbrush – with a blindfold and socks on request.
The water is significant as Delta will offer what it calls “full-sized bottle of water” on Transatlantic flights less than 3,850 miles from the US to Europe. This is good, as dehydration is one of the nasty effects of being on a pressurised tube for hours on end.
The earbuds shown will be featured on US Domestic First Class flights, as well as offered to International Economy Class passengers – in line with what American Airlines are doing, but still a better touch than some of the headphones around on a plane (compared to some earphones which last as long as the flight… quite literally – walk off the plane… earphones fall to bits)
There’s only one thing missing from this amenity kit to me… and that a pen.
Why?
Pens are very useful when travelling (and I forget one regularly). Most importantly, they’re very useful on a plane when you realise you have to fill in a customs form or an immigration form… and you remember your nearest pen is either 1) in your bag above you or 2) sitting on your desk at home.
Whilst you can try to borrow a pen off a seat mate or a passing flight attendant, it would be better for a pen to be pre-packed to fill in forms for those countries who deem a piece of additional paper is needed to enter it.
An amenity kit is also a rather nice sales tool if used right – people will remember they got an “onboard gift” from the airline, that allowed them to rest and relax (that, and eBay seems to love amenity kits if you look at their product listings)/
Whilst it won’t be as famous as the Rimowa amenity kits, this amenity kit is designed to help you rest – and these items provided represent a start.
But next time… throw in a pen please? 😉

Don’t be greedy dude, pens are expensive.
All travelers should have one; buy your own, geez… :-).
I applaud Delta for doing this although I think its an agreement between them and Virgin so the products are not that disproportionate.
Good deal! Watch the others try to follow now.
