Crossfleeting? It’s the point where fleets of different airlines start to mix and mingle.
As the merger of American Airlines and US Airways continues apace, the fleets of the two airline will start to intermingle, with US Airways planes flying AA flights, and vice versa.
So, what’s going over to where?
US Airways aircraft will operate American Airlines services from the 1st June, with the following services switching:
- Charlotte – Chicago O’Hare
- Charlotte – Miami
- Los Angeles – Phoenix
These flights are showing in the reservation systems already:
Note flight 1979/1987 – operated by US Airways
The next month – commencing 2nd July – , US Airways aircraft will operate selection of services American Airlines flights out of Miami
- Miami – Detroit
- Miami – New Orleans
- Miami – Raleigh
- Miami – Tampa
Again these are showing on American Airlines booking engines:
Finally, some US Airways flights will be operated by American Airline equipment also from the 2nd July
- Phoenix – Detroit
- Phoenix – Newark
- Phoenix – Orange County
- Phoenix – Seattle
Checking the US Airways booking systems, these are still listed as operated by US Airways flights at the moment.
As usual, when mergers happen its important if you’re relying on flying on a certain type of plane to check what you’re flying. This will become more important if you’re used to a certain seating standard or certain amenities.
So check before you book, and check before you fly…

This is great news for US flyers; I’ve recently flown both US and AA between Phoenix and Chicago several times. The AA service far exceeds the US service. I was stunned to see on board entertainment on AA having been an exclusive US flyer the past several years. I’m only hoping that US doesn’t degrade AA’s level of service.
