British Airways suspends flights to Liberia and Sierra Leone

06/08/2014 by Kevincm

In the wake of the Ebola virus outbreak, British Airways has suspended services between London to Monrovia, Liberia and Freetown-Lungi International Airport.

BA State:

British Airways has temporarily suspended flights to and from Liberia and Sierra Leone until 31 August 2014 due to the deteriorating public health situation in both countries.

The safety of our customers, crew and ground teams is always our top priority and we will keep the routes under constant review in the coming weeks.

What to do if your flight has been cancelled

If your flight has been cancelled, please do not travel to the airport.

We have a policy in place outlining the options available to you and how to make changes to your booking.

With flights suspended until at least 31st August 2014, there are rebooking options:

  • Rebooking from 1st September 2014.
  • Rebooking with British Airways on its flights in August between London and Abuja, Lagos, Accra or Nairobi. Onward journeys to Liberia or Sierra Leone at customers expense.
  • British Airways are looking at rebooking customers onto different flights too.

As usual, if you have booked directly with BA, you can change your booking online. If you have booked your ticket with a travel agent, you’ll need to talk to them.

The full BA policy is at http://www.britishairways.com/main/flightops?p_faqid=5072

British Airways are the 2nd major international carrier to temporarily withdraw from the area, with Emirates leading. Various other regional airlines have pulled services too.

The service which operated three times a week on Monday, Wednesday and Saturdays has been suspended due to the outbreak of the Ebola virus in the area.

The service was operated with a Boeing 767-300ER on this route.

Whilst its disappointing to see flights suspended, “safety first” comes to mind.  How other carriers will react will be interesting to see.
