American Airlines first 787 takes to the assembly line ** UPDATED **

15/09/2014 by Kevincm

Yes, it’s another airline getting ready to receive a brand new type of aircraft – except its going to be a rather big customer, being American Airlines.

Except their first aircraft isn’t complete yet – its in assembly.

As you can see from this image, the plane is missing a fair bit. such as a tail, a cockpit section, and other quite important bits (like passenger amenities).

The plane in Position 1A – where the wing-join to the fuselage is completed.

The plane has moved along since then, and is looking more like a plane.

The plane is being assembled in Everett, Washington, with delivery for the first aircraft expected in November, and entry into domestic service initially in 2015.

American have a total of 16 Boeing 787-8s and 26 Boeing 787-9s variants on order.

Hopefully, with the introduction of these planes, more new routes will be introduced, and older 767s can make a graceful exit from service.
