Last year, I wrote about the glut of capacity on London City to Dublin Route, with a three-way battle between CityJet, British Airways and FlyBe for the fight for customers on this city pair.
In the article, I asked an important question:
Is that sustainable? I doubt it.
Also I stated in relation to the number of flights:
However, I get the feeling there maybe too many flights here
Well – it comes to pass that FlyBe is going to bow out of the battle after five months, citing losses and poor loads.
The route will be suspended from 31st May 2015 according to CityAM, with a 20% reduction of seats between London City and Dublin Airport.
Checking the Flybe booking engine, this appears to be true:
The route started up in October 2014 – offering three flights a day between London City Airport and Dublin, and seems to have been squeezed by CityJet and British Airways who offered more flights, more suitable timings and frequent flyer benefits.
Flybe has also pulled its London City to Inverness route too, leaving operations to Aberdeen, Amsterdam, Belfast-City, Edinburgh and Exeter.
Is this the end of the Flybe route cuts? I strongly doubt it – Flybe is turning itself around and turning over a profit, and I would suggest that there is still plenty of fat to trim…
