As most of you are aware, US Airways and American Airlines are merging their frequent flyers into one. Well, that’s not the only part of the merger that’s going on at the moment.
According to FlightGlobal, the two airlines are on track to get a single operating certificate from the US Federal Aviation Administration on the 8th April 2015.

The single certificate is a very important part of the merger – that begun back in December 2013 – which will allow the US Airways and American Airlines legacy operations to be combined and operate as a single airline.
The single certificate will allow the combined entity to use the same operating procedures for flight, maintenance and dispatch – with some procedures remaining unique to each legacy airline whilst the merger continues.
There are two big moves that will push forward the merger toward end of the year:
- The opening of a new operations centre that will bring together the US Airways and American Airlines operations into one.
- The airlines merge their reservation system onto a system based on Sabre during the 4th Quarter of 2015.
There’s still a long way to go as the two airlines become one – but it’s a case of a slow and deliberate manoeuvres to complete the merger it as opposed to a single move.
