We’ve all been aboard planes where there has been no power or no In flight entertainment aboard. Some of this is down to the cost of these system. Combined with the weight of the systems, these can put airlines off installing any sort of IFE system.
Well, it seems Lumexis has come up with a low-cost solution with its iPAX IFE solution.
The Lumexis iPAX is a Wireless IFE solution (so no need for big boxes under seats, taking valuable space), coming in at $1,495 per unit, and weighing 8.9 ounces per unit). The units themselves deliver HD picture quality, and are customisable to need.
So let’s have a look at these units (which were on show at Aircraft Interiors Expo 2015)
iPAX in-seat. Whilst the screen isn’t that big – in comparison to seat pitch you’re normally in on LCC’s the screen should be quite close to the eyes.
iPAX installed on a “bulkhead”
In flight purchasing option – an easy-to-use “cart” system.

Nice clear content on display.
As well as being an IFE system, it can also be used as a map system, a vending solution to sell duty-free, snacks and drinks – as well as being able to deliver safety messages direct to the seat.
The iPAX system can be configured a credit card reader and a 2.1A USB charging point too – allowing passengers charge up devices on the road.
The system is designed for short-medium haul route, which if tuned right could be a nice revenue generating system – rather than a passive IFE device.
More interestingly, the system weighs a lot less than a traditional overhead screen system, which is limited in its nature (mainly advertising messages, some bad comedy or if you’re lucky – the map).
There is plenty of room for this product – from legacy carriers who need to have a difference factor to the low-cost carrier who wants to further monetise the passenger experience.
For airlines considering lower cost IFE solutions, the Lumexis iPAX IFE system could be one to keep an eye on.
Lumexis IFE solutions fly aboard airlines such as flyDubai, Turkish Airlines and Transaero – and with a system like iPAX, I would hope a few more in the future.

Hi Kevin – You say that the system is wireless, so how does it therefore charge itself?
Kevincm says
Hi Jarvis – it’s powered to seat – content is delivered wirelessly. The wire-to-seat allows the USB power plug and credit card reader to do their things.
