UK FCO advises “All but essential travel” in Tunisia after Sousse attack

10/07/2015 by Kevincm

For those of you hoping to head off to Tunisia for a break, you’d best be on the telephone to your tour operator.

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office has updated its advice for Tunisia – and it’s not good with them stating

“The Foreign and Commonwealth Office now advise against all but essential travel to Tunisia”

A quick look at the map provided indicates it is not a good picture in the least:

With this action, UK tour operators who have holidaymakers out in Tunisia are having to fly people home early – cutting short their holidays.

Around 3000 UK Citizens are believed to be in Tunisia at this time.

Earlier this month, there was an attack in Sousse which claimed the lives of 30 British Citizens. The FCO has been considering its travel advice, and states the following:

Since the attack in Sousse, we have been working closely with the Tunisian authorities to investigate the attack and the wider threat from terrorist groups in Tunisia. Although we have had good co-operation from the Tunisian government, including putting in place additional security measures, the intelligence and threat picture has developed considerably, reinforcing our view that a further terrorist attack is highly likely. On balance, we do not believe the mitigation measures in place provide adequate protection for British tourists in Tunisia at the present time and we have therefore changed our travel advice accordingly.

If you’re out there with a tour operator, you should be contacting your local representative as soon as possible to engage in leaving the area. Repatriation flights have commenced for those who are travelling.

If you’re travelling independently, you should leave the country via commercial means as soon as possible.

If you’re yet to go on holiday in Tunisia or Sousse, contact your operator. Thomson and First Choice have cancelled any remaining holidays for the summer season, whilst Thomas Cook have cancelled all holidays until 31st October.

Terrorism and violence have negative effects. Sadly, The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office thinks its too dangerous for any UK Citizen to remain in Sousse or Tunisia unless its essential.
