Norwegian plans Transatlantic operations to Boston, New York from Cork

26/09/2015 by Kevincm

Norwegian Air Shuttle are ambitious. We all knew this when they launched their low-cost attack to the United States with Boeing 787s.

It seems that Norwegian are  continuing to be ambitious, with plans to commenced operation from Cork.

And Two of the Three Services will be TRANSATLANTIC with Cork to Boston and Cork New York JFK.

An additional service to Barcelona will be launched too.

The planned operations look a bit like this:

  • A Cork to Boston service planned for May 2016 with 4-5 flights per week
  • A Cork to Barcelona service planned from May 2016 with 4-5 flights per week
  • A Cork to New York service planned for 2017 (no frequencies given).

For those of you thinking of doing this in comfort – think again, as these routes will be operated with Boeing 787-800 aircraft in the first instance and with Boeing 737 MAX 8’s later on.

The use of narrow body aircraft across the pond make sense providing they meet the safety criteria, allowing routes to make an income as well as providing connectivity.

Norwegian are following Air Canada and WestJet it in operating Transatlantic routes with smaller narrow body aircraft (compared to United, Delta and American who operate larger Boeing 757-200s across the Atlantic).

Flights will be operated under Norwegians Irish subsidiary Norwegian Air International Ltd as the airline considers further expansion

Routes are subject to approval by the US Department of Transport. With the relationship that Norwegian and the US-DOT have, this could be one to watch to see if they allow the operation of the routes.

Still, Cork. Not the first entry point into Europe that I can imagine….
